Dr. Bert Jan Lommerts (64) has obtained a master’s degree and a PhD degree, with the highest honors, in Chemical Engineering and Polymer Chemistry from the University of Groningen. He previously served as a senior advisor to the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs, co-founder of the Dutch GoChem innovation consortium for SME’s, visiting professor at the University of Eindhoven, member of the daily board of the Dutch Chemistry Association, and member of the Dutch Science Board. Furthermore, he was elected twice as president of IBEF, the International Bitumen Emulsion Federation. He has over 40 years of experience in the field of materials science, particularly in the application of fiber science and road materials. At Akzo Nobel, Dr. Bert Jan Lommerts was involved in the development of high-performance fibers for rubber performance enhancement, e.g., tires, and composite reinforcement. He also served as the factory manager for the Twaron production facility in the Netherlands. He was later appointed as the CEO of Latexfalt b.v. in the Netherlands. This company was formed by the merger of three smaller production enterprises, whose business involves the development, production, application, and sales of high-performance asphalt and asphalt emulsions and transparent binders for road applications. Due to continuous research and development of innovative road products, Latexfalt has grown significantly, and after 23 years, he decided in 2019 to become an independent worldwide materials consultant. Presently, he is the acting CTO of the XiYueFa group in ShanXi, China, and Chief Marketing Advisor for the XiYueFa sales headquarters in Pudong, Shanghai. Furthermore, he is currently also supporting the Dutch Road Authorities, where he is focusing on the sustainability of road construction materials by developing recycling and preservation technologies and using bio-based binder formulations for various road applications.
